Open Water

Open water stretches before your kayak — exhilarating and daunting at once. The effort to move yourself toward a distant shore falls solely to you, every stroke a choice, every gust of wind a new test. This original painting captures that exact feeling: the tension between uncertain challenge and the quiet payoff of arrival.

Every summer for years I've paddled across a broad sweep of the St. Lawrence River, hoping the wind will be on my side. The long crossing, the changing light, the rhythm of the paddle are all part of the journey. Reaching the sandy beach at Leek Island (Thwartway Island) — that small, welcoming strip of land — always makes the effort worthwhile.

This piece celebrates perseverance, the beauty of open water, and the simple joy of landing on shore. It’s a reminder that the most rewarding destinations are often reached one determined stroke at a time.

On the River
$125.00

When I’m in my kayak and the wind and light are right, the water becomes a playground of concentric circles and crisp ribbons of contrast. Those fleeting patterns fascinate me — another way nature reveals its beautiful designs. River Reflections have long been a favorite subject for my large paintings; now I’m exploring the theme on small gallery wood 6 x 6 surfaces in acrylic and oil.

Each piece has a 1.5‑inch profile with the sides painted black and arrives ready to hang or sit for display in your home. These compact works are a quiet reminder of days on the water and the everyday wonders that surround us.

I sign and title this series on the back of each painting. Shipping within Canada is included.

Inside
my world

I feel lucky to have spent most of my life enjoying Ontario’s lakes and rivers. Growing up in the Thousand Islands continues to inspire my waterscapes — those islands, channels and changing light have an enduring way of finding their way into my work.

Paddling through these waterways in my kayak, I gather moments and images that become stylized impressions on canvas. The seasons slip into the paintings as well — autumn’s warm reflections and contrast in fields and sky are a favourite subject. I love Ontario’s ever-changing, enchanting palette to draw from.

Now living in the village of Merrickville, beside the Rideau Canal — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — I’m fortunate to be surrounded by historic charm and an active arts community. Merrickville is full of artists, and I’m a proud member at large of the Merrickville Arts Guild. This community, the waterways and the seasons together continue to fuel my creative practice and the unique original artwork I share.
